The Monterey Bay Aquarium
For the last 27 years, whenever possible, my family has vacationed at the happiest place on earth.
No, not Disneyland, but the Monterey Bay Aquarium located on Cannery Row, in Monterey Bay California. Although my family has lived primarily in Utah for the last 35 years, we were there in 1984 when the Monterey Bay Aquarium officially opened it's doors to the public. My mother and father, and all 8 children in tow. I was only 3 years old at the time, but that didn't change the poignancy nor impact of my memories. Even though salt water already flowed through my veins, (and still does) the Aquarium has done nothing but infuse my love of the ocean, and of Marine Biology with even more vigor. (It also doesn't hurt that almost right next door to the Aquarium, still resides the laboratory of my personal hero, Marine Biologist, Doctor Edward Ricketts.)
I took this photo by boat, on a whale watching trip with my own 5 year old son, and my mother and father. Now our family love for the Monterey Bay Aquarium, has spanned 3 different generations.
